Mark Hahn was a well-known endurance racer who unfortunately lost his life back in 2004 during a race. This competition was set up in his honor. In fact, this IJSBA event draws hundreds of teams to compete here in Lake Havasu every single year.
The 2023 IJSBA Mark Hahn Memorial 300 is a 300-mile course traversing the entire lake tackled by separate teams. In this long of a run, strategy plays into the outcome as much as skill. Instead of a flat-out race to the finish, teams must use strategy for when they stop for fuel, when they change out riders, and how that day's water conditions affect their vessel in order to make their way to the winner's circle. It's almost like a chess game...but on water.
This IJSBA-sanctioned race begins with a Le Mans start. What does that mean? Racers line up on the beach and run to their awaiting PWC in the water once organizers give the signal to start the competition. This is one of the few endurance races left to use such a start and it adds another level of excitement to the day.

Racing begins with a warm-up lap at 9 am for those racers interested in checking out the course, lake conditions, and their equipment. Then, at 10 am, the competition begins. An awards banquet for all participants takes place from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Aquatic Center.
If you are interested in joining in on the longest endurance race in the world, contact Ross Wallach with RPM Racing at rpmracingent@yahoo.com. Of course, these competitors also need people cheering them on. So, you can always come out to Lake Havasu State Park and root on your team to the finish line.
